Back to School - Bookmarks

Today is anything but a card,  since it is time for the kiddos to get ready for the new school year, I decided to make a few bookmarks.

My niece is wild about animals,  so I chose the "Tall Jungle Blocks" from Bugaboo Stamps for my images.

Using the slice feature in DS, I cut out a frame to cover the stamps frame for a little added dimension.  These images are perfect for bookmarks.

I found two great tools for making my own tassels with embroidery thread, which I have a ton of.  The Clover Tassel Maker and the Clover Handy Thread Twister.  I purchased the smaller tool, because I just don't see a need for the larger one.  I used two shades of thread to make my tassel and kept the tassle loop large enough to loop through the bookmark.  I think I am finished buying twine, since I can make my own color combo's with the thread twister.

I cut out "This book belongs to:" in vinyl and put it on back of the bookmark.  They measure about 2"x6".

This is my last project as a guest designer on "Catch the Bug Challenge" blog with Bugaboo Stamps.  I really enjoyed the last two months, and was thrilled to be a part of a wonderful team, and work some fabulous stamps created by an amazing artist.

Thanks for following me these past two months.   Don't forget to get your Bugaboo Digital stamps at 50% off, today is the last day.

Till next time,

Freebie Friday - Bugaboo Stamps

TGIF! It's Friday and that means "Freebie Friday" at the Bugaboo Store.

I chose these great patterned paper, which I thought worked really well with the image.

I stamped on a few tiny little flowers and used Nuvo crystal drops on them to give them a little dimension.

Challenges:

Don't forget you can still get your images from Bugaboo Stamps at 50% off, this sale runs to the end of the month.

Stamp with your Embossing Folders

Sometimes I just can't find the colors in my patterned paper I want, or I am not happy with any patterns.  So I am always looking for a way to create my own backgrounds.  I have a ton of embossing folders, so I searched the internet for other techniques.  Here is one I found that I thought would be perfect, I have tons of embossing folders. So I did not create this technique, I don't even know who did, but there are tons of videos out there showing how to do this.

I am featuring "Unicorn Digi Stamp Set" from the Bugaboo Store.  First off, I used two of the png images to create my image.  The sentiment I created on my own with my own fonts.  I use Sure Cuts A Lot, but there are several tools that you can do this with, you will need to get to those special characters included with the fonts.  This font is "Lovely You" (free from Font Bundles) and "Georgia".

I actually stamped my image twice.  First with Versamark, then heat embossing, second with ink.  Do it however you like and make it your own.

Let's get to the instructions.  The following is a list of the tools needed, I have links to some products on Amazon (not always the best price), but you can get them anywhere and are not exactly the tools I used.

1.  Piece of card stock about 5" x 6 "
2.  Tim Holtz Distress inks of your choice (my preference, but any ink pad will do)
3. Embossing folder of your choice
4. Large acrylic stamping block (optional)
5.  Clear embossing powder
6.  Heat gun
7.  Versamark Ink
8.  Embossing powder tool
9.  Masking or painters tape (Dollar Tree)
10.  Tim Holtz Distress Ink Blending Tool
11.  Crafting Mat ( I use these for ironing on HTV too)
12.  Paper Towel

Directions:

Prepare your card stock for heat embossing powder before you stamp.  I used the EK Tools embossing powder tool, but there are several alternatives out there.  A real inexpensive alternative is some type of powder (Talc or baby powder) tied inside a baby sock, or any small sock you have.  This is an important step, it removes the static cling on the card stock, and helps prevent the embossing powder from sticking to areas that aren't inked.

Now open your embossing folder, and place the paper on the side you are not going to ink.  Tape it in place.  You will trim it down when it is finished.

Ink up the embossing folder, make sure to get a good coverage.   I dab the ink pad directly to the embossing folder.  I chose to ink the side that the outline was raised, I tried the other side and didn't really care for the results.

Now close the folder, and using the acrylic block or your hand, press the image onto the paper.

Be careful not to move the paper around.

Using good pressure with the heel of your hand, press all over to be sure the image is transferred.

Tip: If you use a brayer without the acrylic block, you will also get a slight impression in the card stock.

Remove the card stock from the folder and cover it with your embossing powder (I used a clear, but if you wanted you could use a color.)

Once you get a good coverage, tap the back to remove excess embossing powder.

Now using the heat tool, melt your embossing powder.  You can see the embossing powder start to shine as the  embossing powder melts.

Once it is completely melted and cool, (be sure it is dry) you are ready to ink.

Place the card stock on your craft mat and tape in place, using the same tape you had on the folder.

Now blend the inks in,  after each color wipe it with a paper towel to remove it from the stamped image.

Now you can leave it like this, stamp it again with a color.  I chose to use black to help bring out the colors.

And by all means, skip the embossing part and just blend your inks on a piece of card stock and just stamp the image with any color ink.

I have used this technique with stamps, which gives a much better stamped image.  I have so many embossing folders with lovely backgrounds I thought I would give this a try.  I actually did this once with a stripe on black card stock to cut out a pin stripe tuxedo for a wedding card.

So pull out those embossing folders and start creating some new patterned papers.

Christmas in July - OBG with Photo Inspiration

It's Thursday and time for an Oldie but Goodie (OBG), I chose "Christmas Troll" from the Bugaboo Store.  Today's challenge is a photo inspiration.

I found this great flourish Xmas tree in DS, so I cut it out using a silver foil, then I added pink rhinestones for the ornaments.  The sentiment was created using Sure Cuts a Lot 4, I saved it as a png image and then uploaded it to DS.  I then added to my card front and used PTC to cut it out.  I foiled it in silver with my Minc.

The Christmas in July Celebration at Catch the Bug challenge blog, is going all week, join the fun.

Christmas in July - Photo Inspiration

It's Wednesday and today's challenge a photo challenge.  I am featuring "Christmas Troll" from the Bugaboo Store.  The Christmas Celebration at Catch the Bug challenge blog, is going all week, join the fun.

I found a Christmas tree image in DS that I liked and cut it out in silver foil paper.  It reminds me of the silver trees of my youth.  If you are a senior, you certainly remember those trees, maybe even had one.  I am glad to say we never did, my Mom preferred real trees, but my aunt put her silver tree up every year.

Christmas in July - New Release Bingo

It's Tuesday and it's time for a new release at the Bugaboo Store.  Today's challenge is Bingo with the new release image.  The Christmas in July Celebration at Catch the Bug challenge blog, is going all week, join the fun.

My Bingo was column 1 (sparkly, image and embossing).  I cut my fireplace out with a light gray yardstick and embossed my brick folder by Darice.  I then blended the color with  Fired Brick, Aged Mahogany, a touch of Orange Marmalade and Hickory Smoke, with a dab of Old Paper here and there.

The image whole fireplace was created using the slice and weld features in DS.  I found a mantle piece as part of the subscription with the candles.  I did some modifying on that too.

My mantle is cut from white, embossed with a wood grain and shaded and blended with Old Paper, Gathered Twigs, and Espresso.

I used Nuvo Glitter Drops in gold on the flame, I just pulled the dot to a point at the top to look like a flame.  My berries are sequins.

Christmas in July @ the Bug - - Sketch

Todays challenge for the Christmas in July Celebration at Catch the Bug Challenge Blog,  is a sketch.

I used "Christmas Trees in a Row"  from the Bugaboo Stamps Store.

I added a little sparkle with my Stickles in Stardust.  And of course some interest with my embossing folders.  If your card needs something, embossing folders almost always add that little extra.

Christmas in July @ the Bug - Sparkle & Shine

It's here, the Christmas in July Celebration at Catch the Bug Challenge Blog.   There will be a new challenge every day, and the celebration runs until Friday, the 21st.  Be sure to check out all the events.

Today's challenge is "Sparkle & Shine", what came to my mind was glistening snow.  So I chose "Snowman Snowflakes" from the Bugaboo Store.

I found a snow flurry image that I thought would be perfect with my snowman.  I cut it out 3 times so it would add a little dimension, but I only cut the snowflakes one time.

To give my card lots of sparkle and shine I brushed "Star Dust" stickles on my background layer (embossed with Cuttlebug "Snow Flurry" folder) and the flurry die cut with an old paint brush.  I had to put my layer under a book to flatten it out after it dried, since Stickles is a wet application, it warped it a little.

Be sure to clean your brush afterwards, Stickles is a glue product.  I picked up a great tip years ago when I painted with acrylic paints.  I bar of Ivory soap works great to clean your craft brushes.

To top it off, I  applied some snow drops with "White Blizzard" Nuvo Glitter Drops.

Freebie Friday - Bugaboo Stamps

It's friday and time for another Freebie at the Bugaboo Store.    This weeks image is this adorable big bonnet girl decorating her tree.

This image is much too detailed to print small, so I chose to print her out larger.  This image would be perfect for a card with no layers.

Tuesday - New Release

This weeks new release is sassy "JJ - Candycane".  I used the sketch from My Favorite Things to come up with this design.

When I saw the sketch this week, I thought of a snow globe.  So  I decided to make a shaker card.   I thought JJ standing in front of the snow globe was perfect.  I really love how it came out.  I don't fussy cut any of my images, I use Sure Cuts A Lot to create cutting dies for all my digital stamps.  I keep the digital stamp with the die cut file, this way sizing is never an issue.  This image is imported into Design Space (DS), then I use Print Then Cut (PTC) to cut the stamp out.

I wanted something in my snow globe,  I found an old CTMH stamp set, it was one of the workshop kits, and stamped my trees and sentiment.

I used fun foam to add the dimension.  Using my MFT circle dies, I was able to cut the circle from the card front and the foam at the same time, so I didn't have any placement issues.

I then used a Spellbinders plain circle and the MFT inside/out stitched circle to make the frame around the globe.  The base I just cut a strip about 5/8" wide and used a corner crop on each corner.  I added a little faux stitching with a border die.

Surf's Up - Freebie Friday

TGIF!  That also means there is a freebie available at the Bugaboo Store.  Remember, all stamps are 50% off this month.

This weeks image is for all you beach lovers out there, or those surfer dudes in your life.

Since I decided to send this card to a dear friend in Florida, I added a sentiment "Hello".  I found a great image in DS instead of stamping one.  I also cut out a sunburst background, I tried a little shading with my Distress inks, I just can't always get a good transition,

I added a few sequins in the top corner to balance it out.

New Release - Christmas Jar

Happy Fourth of July!  I hope everyone is having a great holiday.  It's July and that means that Christmas in July event has begun,  all stamps are 50% off this month at the Bugaboo Store.

Today's  new release "Christmas Jar 01" is now available.

I went with two plaid patterns and added some enamel dots with my Nuvo Crystal Drops.  Since this image has a blank spot, I thought that would be perfect for adding a sentiment.  I chose "Joy", since it had to be quite small.  I embossed my stamped sentiment with red glitter embossing powder.

Stella Says Sketch #512

Everyone celebrates Christmas in July, so for this month's sketch I am starting to prepare my Christmas Cards.  I chose "Reindeer Blocks" from the Bugaboo Store.

As you can see I did a little cropping on the original image.  I wanted my images separate, so I opened the file up in Adobe Photo Shop and cropped each image to create 4 separate files.  I then uploaded these images into DS (Design Space), then lined them up on a rectangle and flattened the whole thing.  Now I don't have to worry if my piece fits.

I also thought of a quick tip when creating my cards in DS.  I place little score marks on the edge of each of my layers, then I know exactly where to place my pieces.  Saves a lot of time trying to line things up.  I purchased one of those WeRMemory Keepers laser square, but I am not really happy with it.  I think it is more for scrapbooking layouts, the lasers are not straight and I can't ever get them straight.

Faith Comforts the Soul

It's Saturday and time for another challenge, from Catch the Bug Blog.  This week it's anything goes (AG).   I chose this wonderful image "Beautiful Blocks - Faith"  from the Bugaboo Store.

I tried my hand at coloring with my Spectrum Noir Markers, matching colors to paper is a little more difficult.  I am not happy with the selection of pinks in Spectrum Noir.  If I had to do it again I think I would invest in Copics.

Again I used the Stella Sketch #512 for my inspiration.  My side layer is very simplistic and allows the color to show through.  I didn't have any black twine, but I have tones of embroidery thread, so thats what I used.
